It sort of makes me smile that old cliche "He fought bravely to avoid the school in an attempt to save lives and crashed in a field"

I'd say that's natural self preservation, you'd rather avoid hitting a building to save you own life. What pilot would just say " Oh fuck it I cant be arsed to swerve round that building"

You can just make out the 'Made in Taiwan' on the underside of the aircraft.

Don't think there would have been any flame out, looks like it had props to me?

Re: Taiwan plane crash
The pilot is obviously trying to clear the buildings to minimise the damage and fatalities. I hope he survives but he must have realised he probably wouldn't....

Just guessing, but that's what it looks like. Hope they'll still have above stall speed when they clear the buildings. But no recovery time when they didn't.

67, I see what you mean!

OK - not seen the video (getting an SMS here is a cause for celebration) - I was just going on the stills in the original post and personal...baggage.

From what you say, it sounds like it was a "clear the buildings then worry about what happens next" solution.

Takes speed of thought and bravery well beyond my capabilities, does that.

Incredible video. Appears the pilot saved a lot of lives by evading that building and getting the plane into the river.

Just guessing here, but if as 67 says the airport is right in the centre of town and you have to climb steeply after take off, and you've got a full load on board, one engine might struggle to make it -- the more so if there's a problem with the other engine. That video seems to show the aircraft in a fairly nose-up attitude as it clears those tall buildings, consequently losing air speed and then stalling.

Re: Taiwan plane crash
Isn't there a report of one of the pilots calling a Mayday on account of an engine flame out?

Climbing after take-off on full throttle then losing one engine would have scored full points on the unbalanced yaw scorecard - if the crew did try to miss the buildings and go for the river, they would probably have had less than a dozen seconds to work out and implement such a plan.
